A crucial warning has been issued to UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria: don't rush your return, or risk losing it all.
With the upcoming UFC 324 event on January 24th, the lightweight division is abuzz with anticipation. An interim title clash between Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje will determine the next challenger for Topuria's crown. However, the champion is currently on a hiatus, dealing with personal issues related to his divorce.
But here's where it gets controversial... UFC veteran Matt Brown predicts that Topuria's eagerness to return might be his downfall. Brown believes that Topuria, despite being a smart fighter, may come back too soon, still grappling with personal problems, and ultimately lose his title.
"Ilia will return, but my bolder prediction is that he loses," Brown stated. "He'll rush back, still dealing with personal issues, and end up losing because his mind won't be fully focused. Fighters hate sitting on the sidelines; they want to be the center of attention. I think that's what will drive him back, but it might not be the best decision."
And this is the part most people miss: Michael Chandler, who has fought both Gaethje and Pimblett, agrees with Brown's assessment. Chandler believes Gaethje will win the interim title and then dethrone Topuria upon his return.
"Gaethje is a force to be reckoned with," Chandler said. "If I had to bet, I'd go with Justin Gaethje to become the interim champion and then defeat Topuria later this year."
So, will Gaethje or Pimblett secure the interim title at UFC 324? And will Topuria's return be triumphant or a tragic mistake?
