A legendary boxer's story takes center stage as the film 'Giant' hits UK cinemas, shedding light on a complex relationship that left a lasting impact.
'Prince' Naseem Hamed, a former world champion, has opened up about his regrets regarding the rift with his iconic trainer, Brendan Ingle. This revelation comes at a time when the highly anticipated movie 'Giant' is released, chronicling their unique bond.
Hamed's journey began at the tender age of 18 when he turned professional. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the European champion at just 20. His career peaked in 1995 when he knocked out Steve Robinson in the eighth round, claiming the WBO featherweight world championship.
One of his most memorable victories was against Kevin Kelly in 1997 at Madison Square Garden. Despite being knocked down three times, Hamed staged a remarkable comeback, stopping the American in the fourth round to retain his WBO title.
But the relationship between fighter and trainer took a turn for the worse, leading to their split in December 1998 due to mounting tensions. Hamed went on to fight just six more times, including a disappointing defeat in his penultimate bout against Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera in 2001.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, the 51-year-old Hamed reflected on his relationship with Ingle, admitting, "You can use the word regret." He added, "Watching the film for the first time was probably harder than any other time. Every time I do watch it, it gets a little bit easier. This man was a huge part of my life."
Ingle, who emigrated from Dublin, initially set up the Wincobank gym in the 1960s to provide direction and discipline to troubled youngsters. His impact extended beyond Hamed, as he guided other boxers like Johnny Nelson, Junior Witter, and Kell Brook to world titles. Ingle passed away in 2018 at the age of 77.
It was Hamed's partnership with Ingle that propelled him into the spotlight and established him as a global boxing icon. In the film 'Giant,' Ingle is portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, the former James Bond actor, who feels honored to have been chosen for the role. Brosnan said, "I was wooed by the script. I love the story. I invested my time and studies looking at Brendan, reading the books, and just constantly living with Brendan Ingle."
Amir El-Masry, who plays the role of Naz (Hamed) in the film, expressed his admiration for the boxer, stating, "He was a hero of mine growing up. It was an incredible honor to play him." El-Masry underwent rigorous training, spending 12 hours a day in the gym for four weeks, studying Hamed's fights religiously to prepare for the role.
"The fight scenes look incredible," El-Masry added, proud of the film's portrayal of Naz's journey.
'Giant' offers a unique glimpse into the complex dynamics between a boxer and his trainer, and audiences can now witness this powerful story unfold on the big screen in UK cinemas.
