Interior Health Outbreaks: Vernon, Kelowna, and Kamloops Affected (2026)

As the chilly winter months set in, bringing with them the inevitable cold and flu season, a wave of health alerts has swept across the Interior Health (IH) region, leaving communities on edge. But here's where it gets concerning: Interior Health has officially declared outbreaks at multiple facilities, raising questions about the region’s preparedness and the potential impact on vulnerable populations. And this is the part most people miss: these outbreaks aren’t isolated incidents—they’re part of a broader pattern that highlights the challenges of managing infectious diseases in shared living environments.

On January 5, IH announced a respiratory outbreak at The Hamlets, a long-term care facility in Vernon, affecting the entire building. Just two days earlier, on January 3, Noric House in Vernon also faced a similar respiratory outbreak. These declarations followed a string of outbreaks in late December, including Bastion Place in Salmon Arm, Cottage 1 of Mountainview Village in Kelowna, and the entirety of Fisher Place in 100 Mile House. But here’s where it gets controversial: Kamloops has emerged as the hardest-hit area, with four facilities declaring outbreaks, sparking debates about resource allocation and infection control measures.

The most recent outbreaks in Kamloops include the Orchard Building and Second Floor of Ridgeview Lodge, where a respiratory outbreak was declared on January 5. On the same day, Royal Inland Hospital’s 5 South unit also reported a respiratory outbreak. Adding to the complexity, a gastrointestinal illness outbreak was declared on January 5 in the Quartz West and East Units of the Brocklehurst Gemstone long-term care facility. Meanwhile, The Hamlets at Westsyde continues to grapple with a gastrointestinal illness outbreak first declared on December 16, 2025. Is this a sign of systemic issues in long-term care facilities, or simply a reflection of the season’s heightened risks?

The outbreak list is regularly updated as new cases are identified, covering infections like clostridium difficile, gastrointestinal illnesses, and respiratory infections. These alerts apply to all hospitals and long-term care facilities within the IH region, whether they fall under the Hospital Act or are licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act. But here’s a thought-provoking question: Are current protocols enough to prevent future outbreaks, or do we need a more proactive approach to protect our most vulnerable citizens?

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: this cold and flu season is testing the resilience of the Interior Health system. What’s your take? Do you think more could be done to prevent these outbreaks, or is this simply an unavoidable consequence of the season? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s keep the conversation going.
