Ice-bound Ferry: Tugboat Rescues Seastreak, NYC Commuters Stranded (2026)

Seastreak suspends its Atlantic Highlands ferry service after the 7:00 a.m. departure got trapped in heavy ice during Thursday’s morning commute. To clear the icy channel, a larger tugboat was sent in to break up the ice and free the vessel.

Meanwhile, service between Belford and New York City remains on its usual schedule.

This marks the second ice-related disruption since operations resumed, following a similar incident on Wednesday night. In response, Seastreak has pledged to employ a more powerful tug to handle deteriorating ice conditions.

Riders are urged to monitor Seastreak’s website and enroll in email or text alerts for real-time updates. Those with questions can call 1-800-BOATRIDE.

NYC Ferry is also grappling with unusually thick ice but has begun restoring limited service. The Rockaway–Soundview route, connecting Ferry Point Park in the Bronx to Wall Street Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan, is currently in operation.

Officials noted that several western East River landings and Bronx stops are becoming clearer and more dependable for service, allowing NYC Ferry to operate more reliably. However, sunset Park/Battery Park City and Rockaway landings remain out of service. Riders should expect delays and potential schedule changes as ice conditions continue to vary.

Crews throughout the region continue to monitor ice conditions to determine when additional routes can safely resume.
