Long Eaton's Industrial Legacy: Revitalizing a Historic Mill into Modern Homes
By Jude Winter
The East Midlands are witnessing a remarkable transformation as plans are unveiled to breathe new life into a century-old mill in Long Eaton. Developer ALB Group has submitted an ambitious proposal to Erewash Borough Council, envisioning the revitalization of Bridge Mills, a former early 20th-century lace factory, into a vibrant community of 80 one and two-bedroom apartments.
This iconic three-storey building, situated along Derby Road and overlooking the Erewash Canal, boasts a striking 110ft (33.5m) brick chimney. The structure, constructed in 1902 by F Perks & Son for Long Eaton Bridge Mills Co. Ltd, holds historical significance as it is believed to be the last multi-story tenement factory of its kind in England.
Arran Bailey, the managing director of ALB, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the area's rich lace-making and manufacturing heritage. He stated, 'Long Eaton has a proud history in lace-making and manufacturing, and its buildings stand as a testament to that legacy. We are honored to have the opportunity to preserve these structures, which once provided employment and will now offer much-needed accommodation to the local community.'
If approved, ALB aims to commence construction 'immediately' and anticipates the first apartments being ready for occupancy within a year and a half. This project not only promises to revitalize a historic landmark but also to contribute to the area's housing needs, creating a harmonious blend of the past and present.
