Get ready for some thrilling Champions League action! The draw for the last 16 has just been announced, and it's set to be an explosive start to the knockout stages. A mouth-watering clash awaits as Chelsea takes on Paris St-Germain (PSG), while Manchester City gears up for another battle against Real Madrid.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the presence of six Premier League clubs in the last 16, there will be no all-English ties. Arsenal, leading the pack, will face Bayer Leverkusen, while Newcastle United takes on Barcelona. Liverpool will clash with Galatasaray, and Tottenham is drawn against Atletico Madrid. The first legs are scheduled for March 10 and 11, with the second legs following closely on March 17 and 18.
Newcastle will host Barcelona for their first leg, while the other Premier League clubs will enjoy home advantage for their second legs, having automatically qualified for the last 16. Chelsea's encounter with PSG is a highly anticipated rematch of last year's Fifa Club World Cup final, where the Blues emerged victorious with a 3-0 win in New Jersey.
"It's a tough draw, but we're not afraid," said Chelsea's director of football, David Barnard. "We can't look too far ahead and must focus on each game. We're up for a challenging opener."
Man City, Newcastle, and Liverpool have already faced their respective opponents during the league phase this season. City's win in Madrid in December marked their ninth meeting with Real since April 2022. Hugo Viana, City's director of football, commented, "It's a massive game for both teams, almost like a final. We're excited to go back there."
Liverpool ambassador Ian Rush added, "Having the second leg at Anfield is an advantage. The atmosphere there is unparalleled, and it could be a decisive factor."
The route to the final is set, and if Newcastle and Tottenham progress, they'll face each other in the quarter-finals. Similarly, Chelsea and Liverpool will meet in the other half of the draw if they advance. The final will be held at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30.
Arsenal topped the league phase, winning all eight games, while Bayern Munich trailed by three points in second place. If Arsenal overcomes Leverkusen, they'll face either Sporting or Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-finals. Opta rates Mikel Arteta's team as the favorites to win this season's competition, with a significant lead over the rest.
Opta gives Arsenal a 27.40% chance of becoming European champions for the first time, while Bayern is ranked second at 14.28%. Liverpool (12.83%) and Man City (10.79%) are seen as having better chances than Real Madrid (2.78%), the record 15-time winners. Chelsea (6.86%) is also favored over their last-16 opponents, PSG (4.64%).
"You can't underestimate any team at this stage," added Chelsea's director of football, Barnard.
Tottenham, the Europa League champions, could face their north London rivals, Arsenal, in the semi-finals. They are considered underdogs with a 1.22% chance of winning it all.
"At this stage, every game is winnable," said former Tottenham defender Gary Mabbutt. "We've seen it before; last year, we were drawn for the Europa League and went on to become champions. Anything can happen."
Liam Rosenior, the new Chelsea boss who left PSG's rivals Strasbourg in January, expressed his excitement. "PSG is a fantastic team, and I have experience playing against them in France. Luis Enrique has done an incredible job. These are the games that make football worth it; it's going to be an epic tie."
PSG coach Luis Enrique downplayed the idea of revenge, stating, "It's about playing against one of the best English teams, whom we know well. These are separate competitions."
The Ligue 1 leaders were aware they'd face either Chelsea or Barcelona, and La Liga's top team, Barcelona, will now face Newcastle. Barca coach Hansi Flick said, "We're not celebrating avoiding PSG. We must respect our opponents; everyone wants to reach the final, and Newcastle is no exception."
Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen's sporting director, described Arsenal as "perhaps the top favorite for the title in both the Champions League and the Premier League."
"Everything has to go perfectly, but we're capable of giving them a run for their money," he added.
